Focus and Scope

Yupa: Historical Studies Journal publishes articles in the following areas:

  1. Historiography refers to the writing of history based on the critical examination of sources, the selection of relevant details from authentic materials, and the synthesis of those details into a narrative that can withstand critical examination. Historiographical studies may cover various chronological themes, including local history, social history, cultural history, economic history, political history, military history, intellectual history, environmental history, and other historical studies.
  2. Philosophy of history refers to the study of historical processes and their development, as well as the methods used by historians to understand historical materials.
  3. History of education refers to the study of the past with a focus on educational issues, including education systems, institutions, theories, themes, and other related phenomena.
  4. History education includes studies on how history is taught in schools or society, curriculum, educational values in historical events, figures, and heritage, media and sources for history learning, history teachers, and textbook studies.

Peer Review Process

Yupa: Historical Studies Journal is published by the Department of History Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Mulawarman. Research articles submitted to this online journal are reviewed through a double-blind peer-review process, in which both reviewers and authors remain anonymous to each other. Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two reviewers. Accepted articles will be made available online after the peer-review process is completed. The language used in this journal is Indonesian or English.

To check for plagiarism, the editor screens manuscripts manually through offline and online databases, especially the title, abstract, and body text. The journal also uses Plagiarism Checker X before review and Turnitin before publication. If plagiarism is detected, the editorial board will reject the manuscript immediately.

Review Process

  1. The editor receives the manuscript from the author.
  2. The editor evaluates the manuscript based on the journal’s aims and scope, in-house style, and supplementary data. Manuscripts that do not meet the criteria may be rejected.
  3. The editor screens the manuscript for plagiarism using offline and online databases. Manuscripts with major plagiarism will be rejected, while cases of redundancy or minor plagiarism may require author clarification.
  4. The editor sends the manuscript to reviewers along with the review form through a double-blind review process.
  5. Reviewers return the review form to the editor, with a revised manuscript if necessary.
  6. The editor makes a decision: rejected, major revision, minor revision, or accepted.
  7. The decision is communicated to the author.
  8. If revision is required, the author must revise and return the manuscript without delay. Manuscripts returned later than two months will be treated as new submissions.

Yupa: Historical Studies Journal is published twice a year, in June and December.

Yupa: Historical Studies Journal is a peer-reviewed journal. This statement clarifies the ethical behavior expected from all parties involved in publishing an article in this journal, including authors, the editor-in-chief, the editorial board, peer reviewers, and the publisher, namely the Department of History Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Mulawarman. This statement is based on COPE’s Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors .

Ethical Guidelines for Journal Publication

The publication of an article in the peer-reviewed Yupa: Historical Studies Journal is an essential building block in the development of a coherent and respected network of knowledge. It reflects the quality of the work of the authors and the institutions that support them. Peer-reviewed articles support and embody the scientific method. Therefore, it is important to agree upon standards of expected ethical behavior for all parties involved in publishing: authors, editors, reviewers, publishers, and society.

The Department of History Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Mulawarman, as the publisher of Yupa: Historical Studies Journal, takes its duties of guardianship over all stages of publishing seriously and recognizes its ethical and other responsibilities. The publisher is committed to ensuring that advertising, reprint, or other commercial revenue has no impact or influence on editorial decisions.

Duties of Editors

Publication decisions: The editor is responsible for deciding which submitted articles should be published. The decision should be based on the validation, importance, and contribution of the work to researchers and readers.

Fair play: Manuscripts are evaluated for their intellectual content without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors.

Confidentiality: The editor and editorial staff must not disclose information about submitted manuscripts to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest: Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in an editor’s own research without the author’s written consent.

Duties of Reviewers

Contribution to editorial decisions: Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and helps authors improve their manuscripts.

Promptness: Reviewers who feel unqualified or unable to complete the review promptly should notify the editor and excuse themselves from the review process.

Confidentiality: Manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents and must not be shown to or discussed with others except as authorized by the editor.

Standards of objectivity: Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate, and reviewers should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.

Acknowledgment of sources: Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors and inform the editor of any substantial similarity or overlap with other published work.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest: Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage.

Duties of Authors

Reporting standards: Authors should present an accurate account of the work performed and an objective discussion of its significance.

Data access and retention: Authors may be asked to provide raw data for editorial review and should retain such data for a reasonable time after publication.

Originality and plagiarism: Authors must ensure that their work is original and that all sources are properly cited or quoted.

Multiple, redundant, or concurrent publication: Authors should not submit or publish essentially the same manuscript in more than one journal or primary publication.

Acknowledgment of sources: Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given.

Authorship: Authorship should be limited to those who have made significant contributions to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the study.

Hazards and human or animal subjects: Authors must clearly identify any unusual hazards related to chemicals, humans, animals, procedures, or equipment involved in the work.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest: Authors must disclose any financial or substantive conflicts of interest that may influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript.

Fundamental errors in published works: Authors who discover significant errors or inaccuracies in their published work must promptly notify the journal editor or publisher and cooperate in correcting or retracting the paper.

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication. The work is simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License , which allows others to share the work with proper acknowledgment of the work’s authorship and initial publication in this journal.

Plagiarism Policy
  1. Plagiarism and self-plagiarism are not allowed.
  2. Authors must ensure that they have written entirely original works. If they use the work or words of others, these must be properly cited or quoted.
  3. Authors should not publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently is unethical and unacceptable.
  4. Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given. Authors should cite publications that have influenced the nature of the reported work.
